If I have to give the money I earn for more than 2 out of 8 hours each working day, for which I may (or may not) receive services, but over which I have little or no control, what is the difference?  Sure, the working conditions MIGHT be better, but not all dem slaves was pickin\u2019 cotton in the field, bro.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus pointed this out once, a bit subtly.  After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, \u201cDoesn\u2019t your teacher pay the temple tax?\u201d \u201cYes, he does,\u201d he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. \u201cWhat do you think, Simon?\u201d he asked. \u201cFrom whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes\u2013 from their own sons or from others? \u201cFrom others,\u201d Peter answered. \u201cThen the sons are exempt,\u201d Jesus said to him. (Matthew 17:24 and following) Kings do not make their sons (or daughters) slaves.<\/p>\n<p>It is those that they have dominion over \u2013 the power of life and death \u2013 who pay taxes. Slaves could be and were killed if they did not provide the labor that they were obligated, by their slavery, to give.
