{"id":15838,"date":"2011-02-27T00:01:42","date_gmt":"2011-02-27T07:01:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oooorgle.com\/BeyondTheCorral\/?p=15838"},"modified":"2015-02-27T08:26:04","modified_gmt":"2015-02-27T15:26:04","slug":"government-shutdown-theater","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oooorgle.com\/BeyondTheCorral\/government-shutdown-theater\/","title":{"rendered":"Government Shutdown Theater"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/c4ss.org\/content\/6301\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oooorgle.com\/images\/Closed.png\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" align=\"left\" \/>C4SS.org<\/a> | If \u201cessential\u201d services were shut down, perhaps more people would re-evaluate just how essential those services are \u2014 or at least whether or not political government is the best institution to trust with their operation and maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>So what, pray tell, is the distinction between \u201cessential\u201d and \u201cnon-essential?\u201d Here\u2019s an easy way to tell:<\/p>\n<p>If the shutdown of a service irritates and inconveniences ordinary people, but doesn\u2019t really reduce the power of politicians, that service is \u201cnon-essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If shutting down a service would actually reduce government\u2019s control over your life, it\u2019s \u201cessential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During a shutdown you can\u2019t get a passport from the government. Your ability to travel is \u201cnon-essential.\u201d If you show up at the border, though, there will still be a customs official waiting there, demanding to see said passport. The government\u2019s ability to control your travel is \u201cessential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dividing line between \u201cessential\u201d and \u201cnon-essential\u201d is fuzzy and only begins to resolve as the length of the shutdown increases.<\/p>\n<p>Early in a shutdown, Social Security and tax refund checks continue to be issued. If the shutdown drags on a bit, the politicians begin to make noises to the effect that these two activities may grind to a halt unless they get their way \u2014 and that it will be the other side\u2019s fault, of course.
