It never really goes away. It is always there. It is the basis of a life that can be lived. A life that can be chosen. People instead choose roles that don’t require that power. They think this is a winning strategy.

It isn’t.

When the Greeks invented their line-up of Olympian gods, they made sure they entered Hermes in the list. He was the god of reversal, tricks, and the disappearance of ordinary reality. He created upside down and inside out. He confounded systems.

However, as usual, the Greeks posited creative power in their gods and forgot that they, the humans, were artists of alternative worlds.
