Today in 1864, the Union army in the American Civil War hanged a black deserter outside Petersburg, Va., for in the delicate words of the army dispatch 'an attempt to outrage the person of a young lady' at the New-Kent Court-house.
To put it bluntly: in earlier times, it was easier to control one million people than to physically kill one million people; today, it is infinitely easier to kill one million people than to control one million people. —
